Kevin Owens' Win at The Chamber Was More Substantial Than You Think

At the Elimination Chamber, Kevin Owens wrestled in his main roster WWE debut match … against U.S. Champion John Cena, for 20 minutes, and won cleanly.

Not only that, but he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, and from the 8-minute mark on … every near fall actually felt like it could have been the ending of the match. There were powerbombs, stunners, Kevin Owens doing a springboard moonsault and swanton bomb … not to mention the most beautiful reversal of a superplex I’ve probably ever seen, into a top rope fishermans’ buster.

And in typical John Cena fashion, he kicked out of all of it. He never gave up. Kevin Owens threw the most impressive arsenal of moves I’ve ever seen a guy his size do at him. He even pulled out all the old heel tricks, stealing moves like an Attitude Adjustment and 5-Knuckle Shuffle, and Cena kicked out of all of them.

Then the unthinkable happened. Instead of Super-Cena overcoming the odds, Owens hit a 2nd Pop-Up Powerbomb and pinned Cena cleanly in the middle of the ring. I can’t remember the last time a Heel did that to Cena.

Kevin Owens debut was impressive as hell, he did everything possible to showcase that he is a meteoric superstar and deserves everyone’s attention. However, it doesn’t work without John Cena. This isn’t a match of the year contender without two equally invested competitors, and that’s what we got.

Everything that John Cena has been working to build up since winning his first world championship was challenged at Elimination chamber. All the unbelievable comebacks, all the championships, all the main events, and all the moments that made the IWC fans pull their hair out in frustration were all leading to that moment when finally Kevin Owens pinned him cleanly.

I love Kevin Owens and he is the next big thing.

I’ve hated John Cena’s character since I’ve gotten back into wrestling in 2008.

However, I can not deny that John Cena deserves his substantial portion of the credit for what he did to make that happen. Kevin Owens win at Elimination Chamber would have been just another dime-a-dozen in-ring debut without John Cena’s 10+ years of “hustle, loyalty, and respect” getting pinned cleanly in the middle of the ring.
